Turn-of-Fate Studio – Tips for Care & Cleaning of Wood

FINISHES, CARE & CLEANING

My pieces from Turn-of-Fate Studio are finished with one of three food safe products.

1. Beeswax and Mineral Oil

It is food safe.

Cleaning:

Avoid soaking it in water. Instead use a damp cloth & give it a scrub, dry it & you’re done.

Finish Restoration:

In time, after repeated cleaning & handling you may see or feel a change in the finish. Because of the nature of this finish it will need to be reapplied. To achieve the same finish use this paste made up of beeswax and mineral oil and buff it into the grain of the wood. I make my own but it is available commercially.

Alternately, you can use any food safe oil (avoid oils that go rancid). Anything you use on your cutting board or wooden utensils can be used over this finish i.e. walnut oil, mineral oil. Just apply it, leave it for a few minutes and give it a buff. It’ll look good as new-if not better.

2. Tung Oil

It is also food safe.

Cleaning:

Avoid soaking it in water. Instead use a damp cloth & give it a scrub, dry it & you’re done.

Finish Restoration:

This finish it will also need to be reapplied. Tung oil is available in most hardware stores (McKinnon Tim-br Mart carries it). Just follow the instructions on the can.

3. Minwax Wipe-on Poly

I do not use this finish very often but there are occasions that it is a good choice. It is a polyurethane that is food safe after 30days of curing.

Cleaning:

Avoid soaking it in water. Instead use a damp cloth & give it a scrub, dry it & you’re done.

Finish Restoration:

This finish stands up the best to heat and washing. In time it will also need to be reapplied. Minwax Wipe-on Ploy is available in most hardware stores (McKinnon Tim-br Mart carries it). It is extremely easy to use and fast drying. Just follow the instructions on the can.
