Great Fall Drives – River Road Ramble

The Hills of Headwaters has some of the most picturesque fall riding in Ontario.  There are some great paved secondary roads to choose from in this area.

One of our favourites starts in Brisbane on the outskirts of Erin, at the corner of Hwy 124 and Trafalgar Road, and heads north. At Side Road (SR) 17, head east to Winston Churchill Blvd and then north. Enjoy the rolling countryside, along tree lined roads which take you around the west side of Orangeville. Just after the road curves to the right, turn left and continue north on A Line which becomes County Road (CR) 11. Head straight north towards Shelburne to Hwy 89, jog right and then left onto 124 north. Reddickville marks CR 21 and you’ll turn right here and start east and begin enjoying some of the roads that make riding the escarpment a motorists dream – no matter what your ride.

Continue east on CT 21, through Honeywood and prepare yourself for the hills and spectacular vistas that await. Turn right at Airport Road and then right again at SR 20, also known as River Road.  A beautiful winding road takes you beside the river, through Terra Nova and into Hornings Mills – just watch for gravel in the corners. At Hornings Mills you’ll turn left and head south again to Hwy 89.  At 89, turn left and then right again at the lights at Hwy 10.

Continue south to CR 8 at Camilla where you’ll turn left towards Mono Centre. Here are more beautiful winding roads to enjoy and spectacular displays of fall colours. Continue along CR 8 until you’re back at Airport Road (#18) – take a right and head south. Again, there are more great hills and breathtaking views to enjoy. Remember to pack your camera or you’ll have to come back and do it again.

The ride would not be complete without experiencing the Hockley Valley so at the flashing light at Hockley Road, turn right and head west again towards Orangeville. On Hockley Valley Road you’ll pass the Hockley Valley Resort, Black Birch Restaurant and Farmhouse Pottery. At Highway 10, turn south and exit at Broadway into the downtown. Stop and Discover Broadway, explore some of the unique shops that grace the town; there are a number of great restaurants where you can stop and savour the day’s experience. It’s a fitting end to a great ride.
