Growing Sprouts & Veggies
Sunday, April 3, 2011
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Tickets: $25/guest (incl. HST)
The Scullery @ What's Cookin' in Erin, ON
Easy. Economical. Exceptionally good for you. It's isn't often you'll find food that ticks all of these boxes. Sprouts, however, do just that...and more.
Sprouting (or germinating seeds) yields one of the most low-cost, nutrient-packed superfoods around.
The practice of sprouting isn't new. However, the nutritional value and economy that sprouting offers has great relevance in the face of today's rising food prices and a renewed focus on healthy eating to prevent disease.
This Sunday in The Scullery @ What's Cookin', Thomas Elcome, a local farmer, will teach participants how to easily grow sprouts and veggies at home to reap their health benefits. BONUS: Class participants receive one free bag of sprouts ($5 retail value) to take home, plus plenty of info to get one's garden growing!
The Scullery is a new extension of What's Cookin', purveyor of quality kitchen products and "from scratch" catering and take-home meals, located at 98 Main Street in Erin, Ontario.
To register for this Sunday's Growing Sprouts & Veggies workshop, call What's Cookin' at 519-833-0909. For a more food and entertaining workshops from What's Cookin', visit www.whatscookin.ca.

Wellington Rural Romp Offers Bounty of Naturally Grown Food
Did you know that over 40% of all fruits and veggies purchased in Canada are imported? You can help buck this statistic by joining in on the 4th Annual Wellington Rural Romp, on Saturday, September 25th from 11 am to 4pm.
The Wellington Rural Romp is one of a number of locavore events happening this fall in and around the Hills of Headwaters. Created by Guelph Wellington Local Food, this self-guided touring event is designed to raise consumer awareness about agriculture in this region--and help put more home-grown food on your table!
On September 25, more than 20 farms, markets and shops around Guelph Wellington County will offer taste-tests, demonstrations and guided tours of their farms amid the fresh country air.
What's up for grabs? Naturally raised and/or organic dairy products, meats, fruits and vegetables. What's Cookin', a cookware shop, caterer and prepared foods emporium, will be sampling some of their specialty salads available for home consumption. They'll also be showcasing local farm suppliers and products they carry in-store at 98 Main Street in Erin, Ontario.
You'll even find a bakery and a winery on the Guelph Wellington Local Food Map that lists participants and full event details.
Ballots are available at each ROMP location, offering a chance to win valuable prizes. This year's Romp introduces a photo contest to capture the best moments of the event.
Town of Erin Earns Spotlight in Edible Toronto Mag
The Town of Erin was featured in the Summer 2010 issue of edible Toronto, a publication "Celebrating the Abundance of Local Foods in the Golden Horseshoe". In the article, "A Breath of Fresh Air", the Town of Erin's wonderful sense of community, creativity and cuisine is praised.
Among the Erin businesses highlighted in edible Toronto are What's Cookin', Ashlar House and Heartwood Farm. These three establishments have partnered to offer two exciting new locavore events: Fall Harvest Workshops on now until October 20, and Maple Sugar Days in the spring.
Making the most of harvest time, the Fall Harvest Workshops combine a small group tour of a local, organic farm (Heartwood Farm or Bernway Farm). Participants learn the story behind the natural food grown at the farm, and help pick ingredients for the second part of the event--a cooking workshop in a chef's country kitchen (Ashlar House) with a catering professional from What's Cookin'. As part of the workshop, participants enjoy a light lunch and a freshly prepared dinner for four to take home and pop in the oven.
For more details:
Wellington Rural Romp, visit http://www.guelphwellingtonlocalfood.ca/wellington-rural-romp Fall Harvest Workshops including ticket information, visit www.whatscookin.ca and www.ashlarhouse.ca
Try being a locavore for a weekend or more! There are plenty of great reasons to do so: - Support local farmers and your community and sustainable farming practices. - Reduce your environmental footprint by generating less air pollution and less packaging. - Get the whole story on the food you eat...and enjoy the benefits of fresher local and organic foods grown right here in your own community.
Happy trails and bon appetit!

There's a New Maple Syrup Experience In the Hills: MAPLE SYRUP DAYS at Ashlar House
Historic Ashlar House, ecological Heartwood Farm, and whole-foods caterer and kitchen What's Cookin' have teamed up to offer a new maple syrup experience in the Hills of Headwaters. Maple Syrup Days at Ashlar House (Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28, Brunch or Tea) offers participants the delight of touring, cooking and dining--all in one unique, hands-on event in Erin, Ontario. Maple Syrup Days is also available for private groups of up to 15, at a special rate, from March 22 through to April 3.
Maple Syrup Days at Ashlar House and Heartwood Farm builds on the concept of culinary tourism, defined as the "pursuit of unique and memorable eating and drinking experiences".* Traditionally, maple syrup season involves a tour of a maple sugar bush for a view of how maple syrup is made, Maple Syrup Days at Ashlar House takes that experience a few steps further.
Participants begin with a tour of Heartwood Farm with its owner Val Steinmann, to actually join in the process of making maple syrup--from tapping trees and collecting sap, to boiling it down and bottling the syrup. Situated just outside the Village of Erin, Heartwood Farm is renowned for its environmentally sustainable food production and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
Maple Syrup Days continues at Ashlar House with a cooking workshop led by professional caterer Jo Fillery of What's Cookin. A seasoned expert in the kitchen with sell-out cooking workshops, Fillery is set to guide participants on the finer points of cooking and baking with maple syrup. Together, the group will prepare two recipes in Ashlar House's beautifully updated farmhouse kitchen.
The finale for Maple Syrup Days is the option of a light brunch or afternoon tea, featuring one of the recipes prepared that day and the other to take home.
Maple Syrup Days promises a unique and memorable learning experience this spring. Full details and tickets for this event are available online at http://www.ashlarhouse.ca/ or by calling Ashlar House (519-994-0064) or What's Cookin' (519-833-0909).
