2008 Winter Curriculum at the New School

The New School

The New School is dedicated to teaching gardening and traditional crafts in depth and in ways that connect us to the natural world. Many of the gardening classes are taught by David Warburton; however, there are many guest artists who offer classes on such things as basket weaving, pressed dried floral arrangements, and rug hooking. All classes take place at the site of David's home Kingfisher Garden in the Hockley Valley by the Nottawasaga River. The New School is housed within a unique "green" straw bale structure erected in 2007, surrounded by the show gardens, water works, and garden centre, known as the Nursery.

In David's gardening classes  much about his approach to gardening is "new". New research from soil biologists has eliminated many old practices. Teaching these brand new (and labour saving) approaches is the intention of the instructors and the essence of The New School.

Over the course of the year The New School offers a variety of seasonal courses that will inspire you, stimulate your imagination, and engage your intellect. Much of this valuable information and practical advice can be use in your own garden and homes.

Comments From Our Students

The weekend workshops I recently attended at David Warburton's school were worth their weight in gold. David and his assistant Susan Feindell shared their vast experience working as landscape gardeners with a myriad of sensible, low maintenance gardening and composting techniques for the beginner and more advanced plant lover. For the intelligent, intuitive gardeners who love to experiment and want to touch down and connect with the earth as our teacher, I recommend attending whatever David has to offer at his organic gardening school.

I thoroughly enjoyed the soil course and can't wait to implement the ‘no rototill’ concept in my garden. Since the course I've seen numerous articles supporting the concept including one in the New York Times magazine.
