Monica's passion for colour and texture exploration, mingled with years of training in clay, fibre arts and decorative finishes at Sheridan College, Haliburton School of Fine Arts and in private studio studies inspired Monica to create her own unique mixture of mediums for paintings and sculpture - both interior and exterior surfaces and organic materials, integrated with traditional artists' mediums. Her collection holds original written prose carved into the stone medium, stone carvings with gold leaf and sculptural tables.
The other key element in Monica's art stems from her heritage. The daughter of second generation Irish immigrants, Monica's ancestors settled in the Ottawa Valley, founding small towns and leaving evidence of their roots behind in the village names of Westport, Cavan and Perth. She fondly recalls a childhood filled with fiddle and piano at family get-togethers and Gaelic spoken by older relatives. Monica has been to Ireland several times, having been the first of her family to return.
Croi go Lamh Studio, established in 1988, is shared with co-owner and husband David Schut, a mechanical engineering technologist by profession, but, time permitting, a musician, furniture designer / builder and skilled artist (Celtic illumination, leather work, pottery and stained glass). The words, "Croi go Lamh", meaning "Heart to Hand" in Irish Gaelic, perfectly describe the philosophy behind the creative pursuits they have both been involved in for so many years. The studio is situated on 25 acres in Erin Township in the heart of rural Ontario. Although Toronto and the Niagara corridor are only an hour away, it is here in this pastoral setting where they find their inspiration. You are warmly invited to visit the studio and grounds by appointment.
